The number of Australian physiotherapy associate positions in Melbourne is set to grow by 1,000 positions to 2,000.
This represents a 2.6 per cent increase in terms of positions from last year and a 5 per cent jump in the number of people working in the industry.
The numbers also show that the number in the field is set for an increase as the number and size of jobs continues to expand.
The number of physiotherapy associates in Melbourne rose from 569 positions in the year ending September to 2 and a half times the figure of 2,200 positions in 2015.
The figures show that there are now 2,534 physiotherapy positions in Victoria.
A new physiotherapy fellowship program for young adults has also been launched.
The program, called The First One, will provide young adults with the opportunity to learn physiotherapy in their first year of university.
This is the first in a series of four new fellowship programs to be launched in the next 12 months.
These are the first of what the Australian Physiotherapist Association (APA) says will be around 1,500 new physiotherapists to be trained across the country.
In the next five years, the APA says there will be a total of 6,000 physiotherapy professionals, with around 3,000 currently employed.
The APA has been calling for a new physiopharmacists role for some time.
The first group of physiotherapeutic nurses were introduced in 2004 to the National Health Service.
The current role was created in 2014, with the intention of expanding to provide physiotherapy support for older people and other people with disabilities.
The new physiocontrol program was created under the Health Practitioners Licensing Act to give physiotherpters the opportunity for the first time to become physiotherapist associates.
The program has already received around 200 applications and is set up to provide new physiobaciliacs in the early stages of training and to provide access to experienced physiotheracists.
The Australian Physiologist Association (APA) is calling for the establishment of a physiotherapy apprenticeship program to allow people to work towards the profession in the community.APA spokesperson, Dr Michelle Brown, said the apprenticeship was an exciting opportunity for people to become involved in the profession.
“This is something that is being designed to enable the people to develop as physiotherapprentices,” Dr Brown said.
“They can start as physiotherapy apprentices and work towards becoming physiotheropists in the same way they do as a physiotherapy nurse.”
Dr Brown said the new apprenticeship would help young people get on the path to becoming physiotherapy assistant or physiotherapy trainer.
“There’s a huge demand out there, but people aren’t looking for it at the moment,” she said.
The apprenticeship could start in the coming months and the APAs new physiolists apprenticeship will start in February 2019.
