The US government is investigating the health effects of chiropractic, after a study found some patients were at increased risk for spinal injuries and other conditions.
The findings are being treated with a “vigilance” over a new chiropractical method, but also called “biofeedback.”
Dr. Eric Grosse of the American Academy of Neurology said the study, published Monday in the Journal of Neurological Science, “is significant.”
He called the results “an important step forward in our understanding of how spinal cord injury may occur.”
The National Institutes of Health said it is conducting a review of the research.
It said the review was expected to take about two years.
Chiropractic has been around for decades.
It has gained popularity in the US for its claims of healing diseases, and because of its popularity, it has become a popular option for treating health conditions including chronic pain and neck and back pain.
Its popularity has prompted research into its effectiveness.
A study of people in a nursing home found a higher percentage of people reported feeling better after chiropractors were present.
The study also found that those who had been chiropractically treated were less likely to have any neck pain or spasticity.
Chichos Research, which studies chiropractics, said the new study is a “significant step forward.”
It said it will study the results in more detail.
A number of doctors are now recommending that people who have neck pain get their spinal cord massage as a way to treat it.
Dr. Mark Zeller, a medical doctor at Harvard Medical School in Boston, said he has been using chiropractal therapy for about a year, and it has been “a godsend.”
He said the pain is “much more manageable, I feel better.”
But Dr. Andrew Kolodny, a spine surgeon at the University of California, San Francisco, said there are some concerns.
He said some of the studies have shown that spinal cord injuries can occur after a person has a stroke, and he said it could be possible that the treatments could have different effects.
Dr Kolody said people who are on certain medications, like the anti-depressant Prozac, may be at higher risk for neck and spine injuries because they may be less likely or able to control the side effects of the drugs.
But Dr Zeller said he did not believe there was an increased risk of the conditions after chiropractor therapy.
“There are studies that have shown chiropractography does help reduce the risk of injury, but these are very small studies,” he said.
He added that the study did not look at patients in a hospital setting, which might mean it might not be applicable to patients who are at home or living at home.
The researchers found that the spinal cord was affected in the study by the manipulation.
In a second study, chiropractor David DeBenedetti and his colleagues said their spinal injury patients showed a more intense pain in the neck and lower back than other patients in the same group of people.
DeBenedett said the results show that it is not possible to make chiropractometry safe, and that it’s important to look at the patients’ physical condition.
“What is really important is that this study really shows that there are different types of people who will have different types or types of outcomes,” he told ABC News.
Dr DeBensi also noted that the researchers did not include people who were taking medication for the condition.
The new study was a follow-up to a study published last year that also found spinal injuries could occur after chiroportaking, but was conducted in a controlled setting.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine has not said whether it plans to conduct a second investigation.ABC News’ Jennifer Nohl contributed to this report.
